The Value of PT

When you’re in pain, it’s easy to think surgery, injections, or lots of tests are the only answers. But here’s the truth: starting with physical therapy (PT) often means faster healing, less hassle, and lower costs.

The American Physical Therapy Association released a comprehensive report including multiple studies on the economic net benefit of physical therapy on 8 different conditions commonly experienced by patients.

These aspects were utilized to determine the value of physical therapy services.

1. Direct benefits- These include improvements to the patient’s quality of life including decreased pain, increased mobility, reduced burden of medical condition.

 2. Costs- These represent direct and indirect tangible expenses such as fees for physical therapy visits, medications, procedures, and equipment purchases; and intangible costs such as time spent and opportunities lost.

3. Avoided costs- These include the expenses that the patient would have paid if they used the alternative intervention. This can be direct, as in copays, or indirect, as in shorter wait times for a physical therapist compared with a physician. Avoided costs also include physical therapist services that reduce a patient’s reliance on other services such as an injection.

💡 How PT Helps You

  • Lower medical bills:
People who choose PT first spend less overall on their care.

  • Skip unnecessary surgery:
Many joint and back issues get better with PT, no scalpel needed.

  • Fewer meds:
PT reduces the need for painkillers—especially opioids—keeping you healthier and safer.

  • Back to life faster:
PT helps you return to work, hobbies, and family time sooner.

📊 Real-Life Savings: Net Economic Benefits Per Episode of Care

Choosing physical therapy first can save thousands of dollars compared to waiting for surgery, injections, or other treatments:

Net Economic Benefit
per Episode of Care

Condition

Stress Urinary Incontinence

Acute Low Back Pain

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Knee Osteoarthritis

Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

$10,129

$4,160

$39,533*

$13,981

$10,739

*Carpal tunnel syndrome treatments compared PT services to surgery, wrist splinting, and pharmacological interventions. However, the study did not include PT following surgery, so the net economic benefit may be even higher than reported.

💡 These savings apply each time a patient completes an episode of PT care—meaning PT isn’t just effective, it’s smart for your wallet.

🧡 The Big Picture

When you choose PT, you’re not just choosing exercise—you’re choosing:

  • Personalized care tailored to your needs.

  • Hands-on healing to reduce pain and restore function.

  • Long-term results so you don’t just feel better now, you stay better.
